Breathe Deep Nashville - Susan Davis and Sterling Marlin

On a brisk Saturday morning on Nov. 5, attendees of the first LUNGevity Foundation Breathe Deep Nashville lined up to the start line of the 5K run/walk. Children, strollers, pets and one under-five skateboarder ran and walked next to seasoned racers and teams with matching t-shirts.
While the weather may have been a bit foggy, spirits were bright as participants joined together to raise money for lung cancer research so that one day, everyone will be able to breathe deeply. Breathe Deep Nashville was one of 31 Breathe Deep events LUNGevity Foundation hosted across the U.S. during November, Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
FOX MC Scott Couch, NASCAR legend Sterling Marlin and rookie Titans running back Jamie Harper took part in the event steering committee, chaired by lung cancer expert Dr. Pierre Massion of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville. The NASCAR and Titans stars had personal connections to the event’s cause—Marlin lost his father, the great racer Clifton “Coo Coo” Marlin, and his grandfather to lung cancer, and Harper lost his mother to lung cancer when he was just 9 years old.
They were joined by over 500 participants, many sharing similar stories of family and friends who have been stricken by the disease. One little girl wore the sign: I’m Walking in Memory of my Grandmommy. I Miss You.
Post-walk, participants enjoyed live music, face-painting, balloon-making, puppets and great camaraderie.
SDI was proud to support LUNGevity Foundation’s Breathe Deep Nashville. Susan was on-hand to ensure the event went smoothly, taking just a bit of time to see what it feels like behind the wheel of a NASCAR car (pictured, with Marlin).
